Gene(ID):
Description:
PRDX4(Peroxiredoxin-4) is also named as AOE37-2, Prx-IV and belongs to the AhpC/TSA family. PRDX4 is associated with acrosome formation during rat spermatogenesis and has a protective role in the male reproductive tract, because the phenotype of mice lacking this isoform includes testicular atrophy and increased sperm DNA damage(PMID:20864641). It is initially synthesized as a membrane-binding 31-kDa protein and processed into a 27-kDa secretory form and is discarded with the residual bodies(PMID:19208552). PRDX4 is a pentamer of dimers(PMID:23025503). This antibody is speific to PRDX4.

Research Backgrounds

Function:

Thiol-specific peroxidase that catalyzes the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides to water and alcohols, respectively. Plays a role in cell protection against oxidative stress by detoxifying peroxides and as sensor of hydrogen peroxide-mediated signaling events. Regulates the activation of NF-kappa-B in the cytosol by a modulation of I-kappa-B-alpha phosphorylation.

PTMs:

The enzyme can be inactivated by further oxidation of the cysteine sulfenic acid (C(P)-SOH) to sulphinic acid (C(P)-SO2H) and sulphonic acid (C(P)-SO3H) instead of its condensation to a disulfide bond.

Subcellular Location:

Cytoplasm. Endoplasmic reticulum.
Note: Cotranslationally translocated to and retained within the endoplasmic reticulum. A small fraction of the protein is cytoplasmic.

Extracellular region or secreted Cytosol Plasma membrane Cytoskeleton Lysosome Endosome Peroxisome ER Golgi apparatus Nucleus Mitochondrion Manual annotation Automatic computational assertionSubcellular location
Subunit Structure:

Homodimer; disulfide-linked, upon oxidation. 5 homodimers assemble to form a ring-like decamer. Can form heterodimers with PRDX1.

Family&Domains:

Belongs to the peroxiredoxin family. AhpC/Prx1 subfamily.
